All students of the Ludlow Elementary and Middle Schools participate in a comprehensive art program. This program is a broad-based approach to art education because it is not only limited to art production, but also includes the study of art history, art criticism, and aesthetics. In art production students make their own art by working with a wide variety of tools, materials, mediums, and techniques. In the study of art history, students recognize and learn to appreciate works of art from different cultures and time periods. In art criticism students learn to describe, interpret, and evaluate art work. In aesthetics, students engage in meaningful dialogue about art. They learn how to discuss their values and beliefs about art, using appropriate vocabulary and supporting statements.

All students on every grade level are involved in projects that develop self-expression, creative behavior, visual perception, manipulative skills, and critical thinking skills.
The art curriculum is designed to be balanced and sequential. This means that learning outcomes, instruction, and assessment are aligned and matched. The learning outcomes for students are identified as skills and concepts in the art curriculum. This curriculum is in compliance with the goals for the National Standards and Vermont State Standards for Art Education.
Students of grades 1-6 have one art class for 1 hour every week.  Kindergarten students have class every week for 45 minutes. All students also have the opportunity to participate in the Art In Mainstream Program. This is an enrichment program designed to correlate and integrate the teaching of art with teaching in the content areas.
Parents are always welcome in the art room. Parent volunteers are encouraged and appreciated. We can always use extra hands.
