Bookmaking Residency |

This page is in memory of Mrs. Rose Cunningham pictured below. She was a tireless supporter of the Ludlow Elementary School Art Program. She generously gave many hours of her time to serve as an art aide and she is sorely missed by all of us. |

Thanks to
the Okemo Challenge Grant for the Arts, an extraordinary learning
opportunity took place January and February for all student of Ludlow
Elementary School. Each student participated in a bookbinding residency
with professional bookbinders Linda Lembke and Stephanie Wolff. Every student
was an author, an illustrator and a bookbinder. Every student worked on creating meaningful text from the content area they were studying in class. Then they created their own illustrations and refined them in art class to accompany the text and to link the images to the words or texts of their books. The students learned about different book formats, the different parts of their books and their purpose, and storyboarding the plan for designing the book that shows how text and images work together. Some of the formats that the students used to create their books are more traditional, while others are more playful in nature. The students also learned how to use bookbinder's tools, art mediums and materials necessary in the actual creation of books. Teachers were also given an in-service to learn about the art of bookmaking. Linda and Stephanie demonstrated the procedures, tools and materials for making seven different kinds of books. Also, discussions centered on how a particular book format could be used to illustrate or complement certain themes or concepts that the students might use for their books. |
