Mrs. Helberg’s fifth
grade class’s community project of knitting squares to make shawls or lap quilts
fit in well with their math unit. Measurement is an important part of making the
5 inch by 5 inch squares needed to make their final product. The students then
took the squares and made the design. They saw how important it was that the
squares were close in size in order for them to fit together properly. Some of
the students even experimented with making different designs and patterns within
their own square.
The class is now
ready to send their second finished shawl to its new owner and hope that it
brings with it happiness, comfort, and the knowledge that there are others
(strangers) that care.
